Big First Inning Dooms Baseball in Gehrig Division Playoff Loss to Cornell
April 29, 2009 | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y. -- A nine-run first inning and a solid start from pitcher Corey Pappel helped Cornell to a 9-0 win over the Princeton baseball team in a Gehrig Division playoff game on Wednesday afternoon at Hoy Field.
Cornell scored all nine runs in the opening inning with two outs. Senior starter Brad Gemberling got a lineout and a strikeout to begin the inning, but got into trouble from there, walking the bases loaded before giving up a two-run single to Domenic DiRicco and a three-run homer to Nate David. The Big Red would tack four more runs on the inning, giving Pappel all the run support he would need in pitching the Big Red to the win.
Pappel went six innings, allowing just two hits, singles to senior Dan DeGeorge and junior Jon Broscious. He struck out 11 batters. In all, four Cornell pitchers allowed just two hits and fanned 18 batters.
Gemberling was tagged with the loss and completes his Princeton career with a 12-6 record. Sophomore David Palms, freshman Ryan Makis and sophomore Matt Grabowski all pitched scorless outings in relief.
The loss ends Princeton's season at 18-19 overall, while Cornell advances to the Ivy League Championship Series this weekend at Dartmouth.
