Dartmouth Outscores Princeton Softball in Doubleheader
April 05, 2009 | Softball
HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth outscored the Princeton softball team 13-7 and 12-7 to sweep a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in New Hampshire.
Princeton (7-13, 2-4 Ivy) scored three runs in the first and two in the second, but four early Dartmouth runs off Tiger pitcher Jamie Lettire (3-4) set the tone that the bats would have their day.
Dartmouth (12-11, 5-1) scored seven runs between the third and fourth innings to take a 10-7 lead, and the Big Green kept the Princeton offense quiet the rest of the way toward the 13-7 final. Dartmouth committed seven errors, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize.
The defense didn't improve in the day's second game and the bats didn't get much quieter. Princeton led 5-0 after four innings, but Dartmouth jumped on Princeton pitcher Michelle Tolfa (4-8) late. The Big Green pushed across eight runs in the sixth and four moree in the seventh to lead 12-5, putting the Tigers in too deep a hole to emerge.
Kathryn Welch was Princeton's top hitter with three hits, while Collette Abbott had the only Tiger home run, coming in game two.
Princeton will close its competition against Ivy North teams with a Sunday twinbill at Harvard.
