Schwab and Giarra Named to Academic All-District Team
May 21, 2009 | Field Hockey, Women's Lacrosse, Women's Swimming and Diving
Princeton seniors Kristin Schwab and Kathrine Giarra were both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women's at-large team on Thursday. Schwab, a member of the field hockey and women's lacrosse player, was named to the first team, while Giarra, a diver, was selected to the second team. As a first-team selection, Schwab will be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America voting.
Schwab competed in seven NCAA tournaments as a member of the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams. In field hockey, Schwab was a member of four Ivy League championship winning teams and played in the NCAA tournament three times, twice reaching the quarterfinal round. A second-team All-Ivy selection as a junior and an honorable mention as a senior, Schwab scored nine career goals and added six assists for 24 points. She was also a four-time member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Schwab also excelled on the lacrosse field where she was a two-time All-Ivy choice, receiving an honorable mention as a junior and earning first-team honors this season. She was a member of an Ivy championship team in 2006 and played in the NCAA tournament in all four season, reaching the quarterfinals on three occasions. Schwab finished her lacrosse career with 83 goals and 20 assists for 103 points. In the fall, Schwab was awarded and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Kathrine Giarra has been the Ivy League's best and most consistent diver throughout her four-year career, and she was a leading force for Princeton in winning three Ivy League team titles over the last four years. Giarra won both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions in both 2007 and 2009 and earned Ivy League Championships Diver of the Meet in both years. In the other two years, she never finished outside of the Top 5 in either event and placed second in both events following an injury-plagued 2008 season.
Giarra's performance scored big points for Princeton in winning the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Ivy League championships. She reached an individual career milestone in 2009 by qualifying for her first NCAA championship meet. She missed All-America honors by one spot in the 1-meter competition, but in her final day of collegiate competition, she earned All-America honorable mention by placing 12th overall. Her finish helped Princeton to 18th place at the NCAA championships, the highest finish for a non-scholarship school and the second-highest finish for a non-BCS school.
