May 06, 2009 | Field Hockey
The 17-game 2009 Princeton field hockey schedule was announced on Wednesday. The Tigers' schedule includes seven Ivy League games, eight home contests and five NCAA Tournament teams from last season.
Princeton was 17-3 a season ago and reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons. Princeton enters the 2009 campaign looking for its fifth-straight Ivy title, its 18th overall and its 15th in the last 16 years.
Princeton will meet five NCAA tournament teams from last season, including defending National Champion Maryland and NCAA semifinalist Syracuse. Princeton will also face six teams that finished 2008 ranked in the season's final coaches poll. Princeton wrapped up the year ranked ninth in the poll and was the fifth-ranked team in RPI.
The schedule closely resembles last year's slate of games as Princeton will face 15 teams its played last season and just two teams that it did not. The season will open with one of those teams as the Tigers meet Ohio State to open the year on Sept. 5 in a game played at Syracuse. The Tigers will complete the weekend on Sept. 6 against the Orange.
It will be Princeton's first meeting with Ohio State since taking the lone meeting between the schools by a 2-0 scored in 1996. Ohio State finished fourth in the Big Ten regular season standings but made a run to the championship game of the conference tournament. Syracuse finished the season ranked third nationally after winning the Big East championship. Princeton fell to Syracuse 3-2 in overtime in the NCAA quarterfinals last season.
The Tigers open their home schedule the following weekend with non-league games on Sept. 12 and 13 against William & Mary and Richmond. The Tigers opened 2008 the season with these two opponents and picked up a pair of road wins. It is back on the road the following weekend for the Ivy League opener on Sept. 19 at Dartmouth followed by a non-league game at Providence. Princeton was a perfect 7-0 in Ivy League play last season and has won its last 10 Ivy League contests.
The Tigers return to Class of '52 Stadium on Sept. 23 for a midweek game with Penn State, which opens a four-game homestand. Princeton topped Penn State twice last season, winning in the regular season on the road and in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Syracuse. The stretch continues Sept. 26 against Yale and the following weekend with a Friday night game against Columbia and on Sunday afternoon when Connecticut, another NCAA tournament team from last season, visits Princeton. UConn was one of just three teams to defeat the Tigers last season.
Princeton then goes on the road for four games beginning with an Oct. 6 midweek game at reigning National Champion Maryland and continuing with games at American, Brown and Harvard over the next three weekends. The Tigers close their home schedule with two games as Princeton welcomes Cornell to town on Friday, Oct. 30 and Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Nov. 1. The Tigers then close the regular season on Friday, Nov. 6 at Penn.
The champion of the Ivy League will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The first and second rounds take place Nov. 14-15 at campus sites.
