September 13, 2009 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON (9/13/09) -- Senior Christina Bortz scored her first two goals of the season to help lead the fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team to a 4-1 win over Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
Bortz's two goals came in a four-minute span and were split up by Richmond's lone goal. The first score came in the 13th minute when sophomore Kathleen Sharkey sent a lead pass to Bortz in the circle and Bortz was able to convert with a shot to the far post.
Richmond answered within a minute when Dani Pycroft knocked a rebound in the Princeton goal off a penalty corner. Pycroft had inserted the ball and then snuck to the near post where she scored. Bortz answered back for the Tigers in the 17th minute when freshman Michelle Cesan brought the ball into the circle and fed Bortz at the post who tipped it in.
Princeton extended its lead with two goals in the second half. Senior Kaitlyn Perrelle got her second goal in as many days when she scored from the middle after a pass was blocked and bounced directly to her. The final goal came from Sharkey as freshman Julia Reinprecht fed her the ball at the top of the circle, where she spun and shot to score her fourth goal of the season.
The Tigers outshot Richmond 18-8 and doubled the Spider 8-4 in corners. Princeton junior goalkeeper Jennifer King made five saves for her fourth win of the season, while Jacki Raithel has 11 saves in the loss.
Princeton improved to 4-0 to start the season. The Tigers begin their Ivy League campaign next Saturday afternoon at Dartmouth.
