Pair of League Games Up Next for Men's Water Polo
September 25, 2009 | Men's Water Polo
The Tigers are 4-4 after two weeks of action. Princeton got off to a slower than planned start by opening the season with a win and three losses in the Princeton Invitational. Princeton rebounded last week by going 3-1 to improve to .500. The Tigers started the weekend with an 11-5 win over Johns Hopkins in its CWPA opener on Friday night. Princeton then swept Fordham and Brown on Saturday in the ECAC play before falling to Navy on Sunday afternoon in the ECAC Championship game.
Through two weeks, seniors Mark Zalewski and Douglas Wigley remained tied atop the Princeton scoring with 14 goals apiece. Both players scored nine goals over the four games last weekend and scored at least once in each of the four games. Wigley's four goals against Fordham were the most for a Tiger player this season. Senior Eric Vreeland, junior Jeff Cole, sophomore Mike Helou and freshman Tim Wenzlau all scored in three of Princeton's four games.
Princeton already has one CWPA Southern Division game under its belt in last Friday night's win over Johns Hopkins. The Tigers and Navy are each 1-0 in the league, while Bucknell and George Washington have not yet played a league game. Hopkins is 0-2.
Princeton plays its first of two schedule league games against Bucknell on Saturday night in Lewsburg, Pa. The Tigers went 2-1 against the Bison a season ago, falling 11-6 on the road before winning at home twice, 11-9 in the regular season and 8-4 in the Southern semifinals.
Bucknell is 6-5 this season and will have already played Johns Hopkins and George Washington this weekend by the time Princeton visits on Saturday evening. The Bison finished fifth in last weekend's ECAC Championships, defeating George Washington and Fordham after a loss to Johns Hopkins.
The Tigers complete the weekend Sunday at home against George Washington. Princeton swept all three of its meetings with George Washington last season, winning 11-9 in Washington, D.C., 17-7 at Princeton and 16-9 in the opening game at Southerns.
The Colonials are 4-10 this season after finishing eighth last weekend at the ECAC Championships during which they defeated Connecticut College and Harvard. GW will visit Bucknell on Saturday before Sunday's game at DeNunzio Pool.
