Yale Makes Most of Chances in 2-0 Ivy-Opening Win over Women's Soccer
September 27, 2009 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Yale scored once in each half to defeat the Princeton women's soccer team 2-0 Saturday evening on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
Princeton outshot Yale, 9-6, and extended the team's streak of never losing the shot statistic in a game this season. It didn't translate to a win, however, as the Tigers dropped to 2-5-1, 0-1 Ivy. Yale improved to 5-3, 1-0.
"Winning this game would have been huge for us because we only have three home games in the Ivy League," senior co-captain defender Melissa Seitz said. "The Ivy League is a huge battle, so we have to keep our heads up and keep going."
Yale scored its first goal in the 33rd minute when the Bulldogs' Mary Kubiuk got behind the defense, gathered a rebound off a Becky Brown shot and knocked it in. Brown was a part of the team's second goal when she found Miyuki Hino sprinting toward the net in the 56th minute.
"I think it's been the story of our season," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said. "If you're not perfect with the ball, that's exactly what happens. We got caught on a couple counters. (Yale is) very opportunistic, give them credit."
Princeton will be away for its next two games and four of its next five. The road swing will begin Tuesday at Fairfield before rejoining Ivy play next weekend at Dartmouth.
