Seitz's First-Half PK Lifts Women's Soccer to Win at Fairfield
September 30, 2009 | Women's Soccer
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Melissa Seitz's 17th-minute penalty-kick goal was all the Princeton women's soccer team needed as a shutout helped the Tigers to a 1-0 win at Fairfield Tuesday night.
After a foul in Fairfield's (6-5) defensive 18-yard box while Princeton was on the attack, co-captain Seitz nailed the PK, the Tigers' first such goal since Oct. 31, 2007 when Diana Matheson '08 knocked one in during a 4-1 loss at Bucknell. The goal was also the first of Seitz's four-year collegiate career as a defender.
The shutout was Princeton's second this season, both in a week after goalkeeper Alyssa Pont and the Tigers blanked another Connecticut-based team in Hartford last Wednesday.
Princeton continued its season-long streak of not losing the shots statistic, outshooting the Stags 14-8 and forcing Fairfield keeper Kelly Boudreau to make a nine saves, a season high for a Princeton opponent.
Now at 3-5-1, Princeton will return to Ivy League play Saturday at 4 p.m. at Dartmouth hoping to bounce back from last weekend's league-opening loss to Yale.
