Women's Basketball Wins Ivy Opener, 70-39 at Penn

PHILADELPHIA (1/9/10) - The Princeton women's basketball team earned its first Ivy League victory of the season, a 70-39 win over the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Jan. 9 at The Palestra.
It was Princeton's largest margin of victory over its travel partner since 1977 when the Tigers won by 34, 82-48.
Freshman Niveen Rasheed picked up her fourth double-double of the season scoring 18 points and adding 10 rebounds, both game highs, shooting 6 for 9 from the field and 6 for 6 from the free-throw line. She also added three steals. Sophomore Lauren Edwards scored 15 points, picking up five rebounds and three assists. Classmate Devona Allgood added 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior Cheryl Stevens added six rebounds, while juniors Krystal Hill and Addie Micir had four assists apiece.
Princeton held Penn to 21.4 percent shooting from the field, as the Quakers shot 6 for 28 and didn't get its first basket until 13:07 to help the Tigers earn a 39-18 edge after the first half.
The Tigers started on an 18-1 run before Sarah Bucar ended the Quakers drought from the floor with a three-point basket at 13:07. Freshman Niveen Rasheed scored the next six points for the Tigers to give them a 26-10 lead at 8:46.
A three-pointer by freshman Lauren Polansky at 5:23 gave Princeton a 20-point lead and sophomore Lauren Edwards followed up with a free throw for the 33-12 lead. The teams would each score six points to end the first half, 39-18 in favor of the Tigers.
A long ball from Edwards to start the second half made it a 24-point game and 10 minutes later, Princeton was up by 34 shooting 8 for 14.
The Tigers got their largest lead of the game, a 35-point edge on a free throw by Kate Miller in with less than five minutes to play. Princeton maintained its 35-point lead, 68-33 before Penn went on a 6-0 streak in the final 1:12 to make it a 29-point game. Freshman Megan Bowen drained a long jumper in the waning seconds the game for the 70-39 score.
Bucar led the Quakers in scoring with 13 points, making 3 of her 8 three-point attempts. Jerin Smith added eight points, Caitlin Stover seven and Amy Donovan six. Jess Knapp led the team on the glass with eight rebounds, with Caroline Nicholson adding four. Penn shot 25.4 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the charity stripe and 25 percent from long range.
Princeton was 39.3 percent from the field, 70 percent from the line and 30.8 percent from behind the arc.
The Tigers improve to 13-2 overall, while the Quakers fall to 1-12 and 0-1 in the Ivy League.
Princeton will take a two-week hiatus from play for finals and semester break. The Tigers return to the hardwoods the weekend of Jan. 29-30 when they host Brown and Yale.
