Emery Maine Upsets Teammate To Claim 2010 William White Open
January 11, 2010 | Women's Squash
Senior tri-captain Emery Maine won the 2010 William White Open by defeating four opponents, including two of her own teammates, during the final weekend before Finals. Her championship win came at the expense of freshman Julie Cerullo, who has been undefeated at No. 1 throughout the season.
"Emery played better with each match this weekend," said head coach Gail Ramsay. "She has been working really hard to get her level of play back to where it was at the end of last year. She had some injuries over the summer that keep her off court so it has been a tough come back for her. But this weekend she showed some improvement in her shot selection and consistency. She was able to limit her unforced error which helped her against both of her teammates this weekend."
In the weekend tournament in Haverford, Pa., Maine opened with a 3-0 win over Lexi Glassman and a 3-1 win over Cornell's Eliza Stokes. That set up a semifinal match with junior teammate Jackie Moss, who earned a 3-0 first-round win and advanced via injury retirement in the second round. The two competed in a well-played semifinal, but Maine played error-free squash late in a 3-2 win.
On the other side of the draw, Julie Cerullo won three straight matches by a 3-0 score, including two against Cornell opponents. Cerullo fell into an early 2-0 hole against Maine before winning 11-9 in the third game. Maine finished the match with an 11-9 win in the fourth.
"Emery kept the pressure on Julie with some great court coverage and I think Julie tried to make some of her attacking shots perfect and hit several key tins that might have made the difference for her," Ramsay said.
