PRINCETON (1/28/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team returns from a 20-day layoff with league games this weekend against Union and Rensselaer on the road. The Tigers currently sit fourth in the league standings with four league weekend remaining in the regular season.
Princeton returns to the ice this weekend for its first games since taking three of four points from Harvard and Dartmouth on Jan. 8 and 9 at home. The Tigers have not played since because of first-semester final exams. While Princeton was off, the remaining league teams made up games in hand and now all 12 teams are within a game played as the season hits the final stretch run to the playoffs.
Princeton sits tied for fourth in the ECAC standings with travel-partner Quinnipiac and Rensselaer, its opponent on Saturday. Princeton wins the tiebreaker should the season end today and therefore holds down the final home-ice playoff spot. Clarkson sits atop the standings with 23 points, one ahead of second-place Cornell. Harvard has 18 points in third, with the fourth-place tie just one point back. St. Lawrence in seventh with 16 points and Yale and Dartmouth are currently tied in eighth for the final playoff spot.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night at Union. Princeton is 13-0 all-time against Union and holds a 5-0 record in games played at Messa Rink. The Tigers skated to a 6-3 win earlier this season at home in a game that was tied midway through the second period at 3-3. Paula Romanchuk had two goals and two assists in the win while Danielle DiCesare scored once and had two assists.
Union is 5-20-1 overall and 1-12-1 in the ECAC entering the weekend. The Dutchwomen were swept last weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard, surrendering 12 goals in two games. Union has wins this season over Sacred Heart, Maine, North Dakota and Brown. Four of their wins have come on home ice.
Princeton completes the weekend on Saturday afternoon at Rensselaer. The Tigers and Engineers are even at 4-4-1 in the all-time series with Princeton holding a 2-1 edge in games played at the Houston Fieldhouse. RPI has held the edge of late in the series, going 2-0-1 in the last three games. The teams skated to a 2-2 tie earlier this season in Princeton. In the game, the teams traded first period goals with Kelly Cooke and Maddie Endicott scoring for Princeton.
Rensselaer is 10-10-5 overall and 7-4-3 in the ECAC. The Engineers are 5-2-1 in their last eight games and swept Dartmouth and Harvard on the road last weekend. RPI also has wins over Union and Brown and a tie with first-place Clarkson in the span.
