PRINCETON (1/9/10) - Heather Landry scored two goals and Paula Romanchuk netted the game winner with less than three minutes to play as the Princeton women's hockey team defeated Dartmouth 4-3 in league play on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Tigers and Big Green traded the lead four times in the game as neither team ever led by more than a goal. Three times the teams traded goals in a short span, countering 47 seconds apart midway through the second period, 2:09 apart late in the second and 2:36 apart in the third period. The only goal that wasn't countered was Romanchuk's game winner.
Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead at the 7:42 mark of the second period when Amanda Trunzo scored her first of two goals in the game. Jenna Hobeika and Sarah Parsons assisted the power-play marker. The lead was short-lived though and Princeton struck back less than a minute later with Landry redirecting a centering feed from Charissa Stadnyk out of the corner past Dartmouth netminder Mariel Lacina.
The Tigers took their first lead of the game at 17:18 of the second period on a blast from the left point by Laura Martindale for her fourth goal of the season. The shot found its way through traffic and was assisted by Melanie Wallace and Paula Romanchuk.
Princeton looked to take the one-goal lead into the second intermission, but Trunzo's second goal of the game with 33 seconds left in the second drew the teams even. She followed up a Hobeika shot with a shot just under the cross bar to end the second period tied at two goals apiece.
Dartmouth started the third period strong and cashed in at 11:28 to take a 3-2 lead as Parsons' shot from the right face-off dot snuck through Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber and just crossed over the goal line inside of the far post.
As was the case for the whole game, Princeton answered quickly, this time on the power play. With Hobeika off on an interference call, Princeton set up in the offensive zone and Landry got her second of the game and 10th of the season off a rebound in front. Stadnyk and Julie Johnson had assists.
The Tigers then continued to pressure and Romanchuk scored the game winner in transition at 17:15 when she skated over the blueline and took a shot that handcuffed Lacina and found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season and her third of the weekend.
Weber finished with 23 saves in the win, while Lacina had 37 saves in the loss. Princeton outshot Dartmouth 41-26.
The Tigers are now 9-9-3 overall and 7-4-3 in the ECAC. Princeton leaped to second in the ECAC standings with the win and are tied there with Quinnipiac, two points behind first-place Clarkson. The Tigers are off for final exams now and return to action on Jan. 29 at Union.
