Columbia Defeats Women's Soccer 2-0 in First-Place Battle
October 16, 2010 | Women's Soccer
NEW YORK -- Columbia will take over the top spot in the Ivy League at least for the next week after shutting out the Princeton women's soccer team 2-0 in New York Saturday afternoon.
With a win or a tie, Princeton would have retained first place in the Ivy, but Columbia's Nora Dooley put the Lions in front with a 58th-minute goal and added to it in the 85th minute. Those were two of the eight shots on goal the Lions had, with Princeton goalkeeper Kristin Watson making six saves.
Watson and Lillian Klein entered the game as the top two goalkeepers in the Ivy League in goals-against average, and Klein built on her lead with four saves to complete the shutout.
The Lions held Princeton's two leading scorers, Caitlin Blosser and Jen Hoy, to one shot overall, with Blosser's only attempt coming in the 17th minute for a Klein save.
Columbia now leads Princeton by one point, 10-9, four games into the seven-game Ivy League season. After Saturday's other Ivy League results came in, the Tigers remained alone in second place, two points ahead of Penn and three in front of Harvard. The Crimson will come to Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium next Saturday for a 5 p.m. game.
