Men's Water Polo Hosts Iona and GW on Saturday
October 22, 2010 | Men's Water Polo
Princeton suffered its first two league losses of the year last weekend after opening the league schedule with five straight wins. The losses to Navy and Bucknell put Princeton second in the league standings, a game behind Navy with only one league contest left on the slate. Navy has two league games remaining.
Least weekend the Tigers were 1-2 overall as Princeton opened the weekend by defeating Johns Hopkins 9-6 behind two goals performances from Kurt Buchbinder and Mike Helou. Princeton was back in the water later that night and fell to Navy 7-6 in sudden death overtime after the game was tied through regulation and the first two overtime periods. Chris Cottrell scored two goals in the win and Mike Merlone made 15 saves.
Princeton is a perfect 4-0 midway through the CWPA Southern Division schedule with a win over each team in the league. Princeton will look to continue that stretch this weekend. Princeton enters the weekend winners of its last two games, topping Redland two weekends ago and Bucknell last weekend. The wins have Princeton 10-5 overall with a couple weekends remaining in the regular season. The weekend concluded with Sunday's 9-4 loss at Bucknell.
The Tigers are back at home with two games on Saturday. The day begins with a non-league game against Iona at 10 a.m. Princeton is 11-0 all-time against Iona and last met the Gaels in the 2008 season, winning 8-5 at ECACs and 13-10 at home. Iona is 3-14 this season and has dropped its last five games entering the weekend.
Princeton finishes the day at 5 p.m., against George Washington. The Tigers topped the Colonials 13-9 earlier this season behind a four-goal performance from Helou. GW is 6-14 overall and 1-3 in the Southern Division. The Colonials lost a single game at Bucknell last weekend.
Princeton plays at home against next weekend as it hosts the Ivy League Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Princeton will only play games on Sunday though. The field features the three Ivy League varsity programs: Princeton, Brown and Harvard, and the five Ivy League club programs: Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn and Yale.
