PRINCETON (10/27/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team opens its home and ECAC Hockey schedules this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink as Colgate and second-ranked Cornell come to town.
Princeton fell twice during its season-opening road trip last weekend against Northeastern and Providence. The Tigers fell in the opener 2-1 at Northeastern and were blanked 4-0 at Providence a day later. The two losses represent the first time a Princeton team has started 0-2 since the 1992-93 season.
Paula Rommanchuk scored the lone Princeton goal of the weekend on the power play at Northeastern. It was the 19th of her collegiate career and she now tops all active Tigers in goals. Defensemen Sasha Sherry and Rose Alleva assisted on the goal. For Alleva the assist marked her first collegiate point. Cassie Seguin played both games in goal for the Tigers and allowed five goals on 76 shots for a .934 save percentage.
The Tigers will look to jump into the win column on Friday night when Colgate visits Baker Rink in the league opener for both teams. Princeton holds a 19-4-2 all-time series edge over the Raiders and an 11-2-1 lead in games played at Hobey Baker Rink, but the teams have split their season series in each of the past two seasons. Last year Princeton scored a 3-2 win at home on a third-period game winner from Danielle DiCesare, but fell 4-3 on the road despite a three-point performance from DiCesare.
Colgate has six games under its belt and is 2-4 overall. The Raiders opened the season with a loss to Boston College, but improved to 2-1 with consecutive wins over New Hampshire and Connecticut. Colgate has since dropped three straight, falling to Providence and twice last weekend to Wayne State. All six of Colgate's games this season have come at home.
On Saturday Princeton hosts second-ranked Cornell in its first Ivy game of the season. Cornell, the 2010 NCAA runner-up opened its season last weekend with a series sweep of Robert Morris, topping the Colonials 3-2 and 9-1. Cornell was the 2010 ECAC champion and advanced to the NCAA championship game before falling to Minnesota Duluth in triple overtime.
Princeton is 40-23-3 all-time against Cornell and holds a 21-9-3 series edge in games played at Baker Rink. Cornell has held the edge more recently, winning four of the last six meetings and going 4-1-1 in the span. Last season Cornell shut out Princeton twice, winning 1-0 in Princeton and 6-0 in Ithaca.
Following the weekend, Princeton has a quick turnaround and will play its third game in five days on Tuesday night at its travel-partner Quinnipiac.
