American Scores 2OT Goal to Top Women's Soccer 2-1
October 04, 2010 | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Little more than two minutes before Monday's match would have ended in a draw, American got the game-winning goal to beat the Princeton women's soccer team 2-1 in Washington, D.C.
A late goal and an early goal won it for the Eagles, who had Patricia Bailey knock one in during the 10th minute and Brooke Sheppard tip in a loose ball in the 108th. In the interim, a Jen Hoy rebound-putback goal made it 1-1 in the 32nd minute, but Princeton wasn't able to pull ahead. The goal was Hoy's sixth of the season, tying her with fellow sophomore Caitlin Blosser for the team lead.
Princeton outshot American 18-9 and had seven corner-kick opportunities to two for the Eagles. Tiger goalkeeper Kristin Watson made three saves while her teammates forced American keeper Lindsey Farthing to make five saves and the Eagles' defenders to make two more stops on the goal line.
The game came two days after Princeton defeated Dartmouth 2-1 to pick up its second Ivy League win in as many tries. While ending the Tigers' (6-4) three-game winning streak, the American (4-9) victory marks the Eagles' first in the nine-game series with Princeton dating back to 2000 and is the team's fourth in its last five games overall this season after starting the year 0-8. Sheppard has had the game-winning goal in three of the Eagles' four victories this season.
Princeton will have four days away from competition before returning to Ivy League play Saturday at 7 p.m. on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium against Brown.
