After leading Princeton to an Ivy-opening upset at defending champion Penn, sophomore outside hitter Lydia Rudnick has been named the Ivy League Women's Volleyball Player of the Week.
Rudnick, a 2009 Ivy League Rookie of the Week honoree, didn't need a brilliant match Friday night to be considered one of the best hitters in the league. She has been among the league leaders in kills all season, although her performance at Penn moved her to the top of the Ivy rankings with 4.12 per set.
But for team goals, Rudnick was needed. And she delivered.
In the Ivy League opener at Penn, which had swept Princeton last season, the Tigers found themselves in an early 2-0 hole. They climbed out with wins in the third and fourth and capitalized on the momentum in the fifth. Rudnick factored into Princeton's last three points, including a kill on match ball to give Princeton a fast start in league play.
For the match, Rudnick recorded 26 kills and 12 digs, and she hit .300 for the match. She had 70 swings in the match, well more than any of her teammates, and she made only five errors throughout the match. The versatile sophomore added two assists and a block in the win.
Princeton will be at home each of the next two weekends, a stretch that will begin this Friday night at 7 p.m. against Brown. Yale, the 2008 Ivy League champion and 2009 runner-up, will take on Princeton at Dillon Gym Saturday at 4 p.m.
