CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (11/14/10) - Third-ranked Virginia scored early in the second half to grab the lead in a 4-2 win over the sixth-ranked Princeton field hockey team on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA quarterfinals.
"I'm really proud of our team," said Tiger head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn. "We have faced a lot of adversity this season and gave everything we had on the field."
Princeton withstood an early Virginia push to start the game before taking an early lead. Virginia earned three corners and two shots before Princeton would get its first offensive chance. Following the third Virginia corner, the Cavaliers were awarded a penalty stroke, but Tiger goalkeeper Christina Maida was equal to the task as she stopped Paige Selenski's point blank opportunity.
Princeton countered and took a 1-0 lead on its first shot of the game off a direct corner in the ninth minute. It was Princeton's first corner of the game and the goal came from Kathleen Sharkey off an insert from Julia Reiprecht and a stop from Alexandra Douwes. The goal was Sharkey's 33rd of the season.
Both teams had chances as play resumed with Virginia owning the majority of opportunities. The Cavaliers earned a total of seven penalty corners in the first half but converted off the rush when Elly Buckley scored in the 30th minute after carrying the ball into the middle of the circle. The half ended with Virginia outshooting Princeton 6-2 and having seven corners to Princeton's four.
Virginia grabbed the lead of the game early in the second half following a corner. The goal came seven minutes into the half as UVa capitalized on a fortunate bounce. Selenski's shot was blocked by a Tiger defender and then bounced off the post right to Buckley who was able to slide it under the outstretched stick of Maida for her second goal of the game.
Selenski made it 3-1 for the Cavaliers in the 54th minute as she converted on her team's 11th penalty corner. Off the insert, Taylor Swezey pushed it through her legs to Selenski behind her. Selenski took two steps and fired a shot that Maida got a piece of, but not enough as it bounced into the top corner of the cage.
Looking to climb back into the game, the Tigers pushed offensively but gave up some chances in their own end and gave up a goal to Tara Puffenberger with 10 minutes to play.
Princeton got one of the goals back with seven minutes remaining when Julia Reinprecht scored her third of the season off a shot from inside the circle after a pass from Katie Reinprecht stationed on the end line.
Maida finished the game with six saves in the Tiger cage while her counterpart Kim Kastuk made two. Virginia outshot Princeton 16-5 and outcornered the Tigers 11-4.
The loss ends Princeton season with a record of 14-5 overall. Princeton made its third-straight NCAA quarterfinal appearance and won its 19th Ivy League title. Virginia will advance to the NCAA semifinals to meet North Carolina next Friday.
