PRINCETON (11/4/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team travels to the Capital District of New York state this weekend to face Rensselaer and Union in ECAC Hockey action. The Tigers are 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the league after a loss on Tuesday at Quinnipiac.
Princeton split its league-opening weekend last week with a 2-0 shutout of Colgate and a 5-1 loss to second-ranked Cornell. Princeton then traveled to Quinnipiac on Tuesday and fell 5-2 despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead five minutes into the contest on goals from Sasha Sherry and Alex Kinney.
The goals were the first of the season for Sherry and Kinney. Princeton has gotten six goals this season from four different scorers. Paula Romanchuk leads the team with two goals scored and is tied for the team lead with both Sherry and Kinney, all with two points apiece.
Princeton will look to get its offense going this weekend when it faces Rensselaer and Union. The weekend starts on Friday against the Engineers. RPI is 2-5-2 overall and split its opening league weekend a week ago against St. Lawrence and Clarkson, winning a 3-2 game over the Saints and falling 2-1 to the Golden Knights. RPI shares two common opponents with Princeton as the team's alternated opponents two weeks ago at Northeastern and Providence. RPI edged Providence in overtime, but lost to Northeastern, while both swept Princeton.
Princeton and Rensselaer have split 10 games in the all-time series with each team winning four times and a pair of ties. Last season both games ended deadlocked. The scores were 2-2 in Troy and 1-1 in Princeton. Kelly Cooke scored in the tie at RPI and Alex Kinney scored in the home tie. Princeton never trailed in either game.
Princeton continues the weekend on Saturday at Union. The Dutchwomen are 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the ECAC and enter the weekend having dropped their last five games. Union has been shut out in its last three games, including a 3-0 loss at Clarkson and 1-0 loss at St. Lawrence last weekend.
Princeton is a perfect 14-0 against Union and won last season's games 6-3 and 3-0. Princeton won 6-3 in Schenectady as Danielle DiCesare broke a 3-3 tie in the second period to put Princeton ahead for good. Corey Stearns had two goals in the shutout win at home.
Princeton returns home from the Albany area to play games at Baker Rink next weekend against Dartmouth and Harvard.
