Volleyball Returns Home For Key Ivy League Doubleheader
November 04, 2010 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton volleyball team is still in control of its own destiny in the Ivy League, but its margin for error has shrunk dramatically. Three teams are tied with two losses in league play, and a third could end up being fatal in the Ivy race. Princeton will be playing for a 9-2 record in Ivy play this weekend when it hosts Columbia and Cornell at Dillon Gym.
Yale currently leads the Ivy League with an 8-2 record and will be playing its final home matches of the season when it hosts Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend. A Bulldog sweep would leave both Penn and Princeton needing to stay perfect this weekend to remain one half game behind them entering next weekend. Both Penn and Princeton will be hosting their New York Ivy rivals; the Tigers will begin the weekend with a Friday night match (7) against the Cornell Big Red. The Big Red is currently 2-8 in the Ivy League and dropped a 3-0 match at home to Princeton two weeks ago.
On Saturday at 4, Princeton will look to avenge its first Ivy loss of the season when it takes on Columbia. The Lions won a home thriller over Princeton by fighting off one match ball and winning the last three points of a 17-15 fifth-set win. The Lions are 5-4 in Ivy League play and are still mathematically in the hunt for the title. The Lions have been led by Megan Gaughn, who ranks third in the Ivy League with 3.74 kills per set.
Princeton will come into the weekend looking to maintain its home dominance; the Tigers are 5-0 at Dillon Gym this season, 4-0 in Ivy play. Lydia Rudnick continues to lead the Ivy League in kills with 4.27 per set, while Cathryn Quinn ranks in the Top 10 in blocks with .90 per set.
