Wrestling Makes Dillon Debut Friday Against Liberty, Binghamton
December 02, 2010 | Wrestling
After a trio of solid November tournament showings, the Princeton wrestling team will begin its dual meet season Friday night at Dillon Gym during a tri-meet with both Binghamton and Liberty.
The competition will begin at 4:30 p.m., when both Binghamton and Liberty square off. Princeton will take on Liberty at approximately 6, and will conclude the evening against Liberty at approximately 7:30. Both matches will be video streamed live on GoPrincetonTigers.TV, although the opening match between Liberty and Binghamton will not.
Princeton competed against both teams last year during a quad at Binghamton and lost a pair of close matches. Binghamton scored a 28-15 win over Princeton, while Liberty earned a 27-12. Sophomore Garrett Frey, who is ranked 13th nationally in the latest Intermat Wrestling rankings at 125 pounds, was the only Tiger wrestler to win both of his matches. Classmates Zach Bintliff and Luis Ramos both earned wins over Liberty, while current senior captain Travis Erdman picked up a win over Binghamton.
Erdman and Frey were among Princeton's placewinners at the Keystone Open on Nov. 21, the most recent competition for the Tigers. Frey took second to No. 2 Brandon Precin of Northwestern, while Erdman placed fifth at 174 pounds. The other Tiger placewinners were junior Daniel Kolodzik (fourth, 157) and freshman Ryan Callahan (fourth, 174).
Frey is coming off one of the best freshman season in decades for Princeton; he won 27 matches, reached the program's first EIWA final since 2003 and became the first Tiger to win a match at the NCAA Championships since 2005. Both Kolodzik and Erdman are former All-Ivy League wrestlers; Kolodzik earned the honor at 149 last year, while Erdman took the honor at 174 as a freshman. Callahan will be making his home debut and could be one of 3-4 freshmen joining him; Adam Krop (133), Brandon Rolnick (149) and Daniel Santoro (184) are all potential starters for Princeton Friday.
Through six duals this season, Liberty has produced a 4-2 record. The Flames picked up three dual wins in its first weekend of competition, going 3-1 at the Terrapin Duals. After starting their day with a 24-12 loss to West Virginia, Liberty rolled off three straight victories against McDaniel (30-9), Maryland (21-17) and Johns Hopkins (35-9). The following weekend, Liberty split its dual matches at Chattanooga. The Flames dropped their match with host Chattanooga, 26-16, before defeating Cumberland, 40-3.
Binghamton is 3-2 on the season, including a 22-13 win over Stanford last weekend. The Bearcats got wins from their two nationally ranked wrestlers; #14 Justin Lister won at 157 pounds, while #14 Nate Schiedel won at 184 pounds. Bingamton also has wins over both Sacred Heart and Eastern Michigan, while it lost close dual matches to both Michigan State and Northern Iowa.
Princeton is somewhat familiar with both teams, outside of its 2009 matches. Binghamton was the host school for the Bearcat Open, where Princeton placed three wrestlers, while Liberty was among the competitors at the Keystone Open.
