December 30, 2010 | Women's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. (12/29/10) - A well-balanced attack gave the Princeton women's basketball team a 67-61 win over Davidson on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at Belk Arena, in the Tigers' first game back in 10 days.
Dubbed the hometown hero of Huntersville, junior Devona Allgood scored 15 points and led the team on the glass with eight rebounds and two blocks. Senior Addie Micir paced the Tigers offensively with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Niveen Rasheed added 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Junior Lauren Edwards was also in double digits with 11 points, seven boards, three assists, and a block and a steal apiece.
Princeton outrebounded Davidson 39-30 and did a great job shooting the ball from the outside, shooting 46.2 percent against a team that holds opponents to 24 percent form long range. The Tigers also sent the Wildcats to line only five times in 40 minutes.
"After a slow start, which can be expected given our travel saga, I thought we adjusted well at halftime," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "We utilized a very balanced attack. I thought Devona played very well in the second half and Addie was the floor leader that we needed tonight."
The travel saga began with a slew of players getting derailed on flights back into New Jersey, due to the snowstorm that hit the Northeast, the final player arriving at 2 a.m., on Tuesday morning. After a cancelled flight out of Newark, Princeton made the 10-hour drive to Huntersville, N.C. on Tuesday, leaving Jadwin Gym at 9:30 a.m., and arriving at 7:30 p.m.
Davidson grabbed a four-point lead to start the game getting all four points off of Princeton turnovers.
The Tigers responded with a 7-0 run to take the 7-4 lead, but Ashley Lax drained a three to tie the game at 15:38.
It would be the Wildcats last bucket from the field as the Tigers held them scoreless for 6:27 while expanding their lead to eight, 16-8. During that first 11:08, Princeton dominated the glass with 12 boards to Davidson's three.
The Wildcats, however, would answer with their own 11-2 run to take a one-point lead, 19-18, with 3:59 remaining in the half.
Princeton would shoot 0-for-7 during that span before sophomore Megan Bowen ended the drought with a layup at 3:40 and gave the Tigers back the one-point lead.
The teams would exchange leads with 6-4 Lithuanian Sophia Aleksandravicius giving her team the one-point go ahead at 3:29 before Rasheed put Princeton back ahead by one 20 seconds later. Senior Krystal Hill layed the ball in to give Princeton a 24-21 lead at 1:21 but Barbara Sitton hit a jumper on the other end to make it a one-point game once again with less than a minute to play.
Micir would hit the back end of two free throws, and finished the game 7-for-8 from the line, to give the Tigers the two-point lead headed into the locker room.
Allgood and Rasheed would combine for nine points to start the second half, which gave Princeton a 34-28 lead and a long ball from junior Laura Johnson gave the Tigers a nine-point advantage at 15:33.
Seconds later Rasheed would suffer a knee injury and was forced to leave the game, leaving the rest up to her fellow Tigers.
Aleksandravicius would hit back-to-back baskets before Princeton went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-point lead, 46-32 midway through the second stanza.
A layup in transition by Allgood gave Princeton its largest lead, a 15-point advantage, 51-36, at 8:52.
The Wildcats would hold the Tigers scoreless from the field once again and had a 10-3 run to make it a seven-point game with a little more than six minutes to play.
Two minutes later it was a four-point game, 57-53.
Edwards dropped in a jumper and Micir drained a three to get the Tigers back up by nine, 62-53 with 1:34 on the clock. Shneeka Center made it a two-possession game with a long ball of her own, and the teams traded free throws to keep Princeton out in front by six, 64-58, with 24 ticks remaining.
Davidson would foul, and Princeton would make three more free throws to take a 67-58 lead.
At the buzzer, Lax would hit a three to settle the score 67-61.
Aleksandravicius finished the game with 19 points, five rebounds all of which came on the defensive end, five blocks and five steals. Lax earned 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. Jasmine Calin and Center both added eight points. The Wildcats shot 41.1 percent (23-56) overall, was 33.3 percent from behind the arc and was 60 percent from the foul line.
The Tigers shot 44.6 percent (25-56) from the field, shot 46.2 percent from behind the arc and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.
