Men's Basketball Defeats Monmouth 64-61
December 09, 2010 | Men's Basketball
After piling up a lead that grew to 15 on an Ian Hummer bucket in the first minute of the second half, Princeton saw the Hawks shoot 50% after the break to make it a one-point game in the final two minutes before the Tigers ultimately held on.
Hummer factored heavily into the finish as well, turning that one-point lead into three at 63-60 with a basket with 55 seconds to go.
Hummer nearly gave Princeton (6-3) a five-point advantage on the next possession after Monmouth's (3-5) Jordan Davis split a pair of free throws to make it 63-61. On the way up for a layup, Hummer was fouled by Monmouth's Ed Waite, and the sophomore's attempt bounced off the rim and out, sending him to the line for two shots.
Hummer missed both, but Kareem Maddox came up with perhaps the game's biggest rebound to necessitate a Monmouth foul.
Dan Mavraides made one of two attempts from the line in the possession that resulted from the Maddox rebound, keeping Monmouth alive for one last attempt.
In the final seconds, Monmouth's James Hett went up for what he hoped would be the game-tying three-pointer, only to have it blocked by Maddox and Princeton gain possession.
Five Tigers shared all the points, with the entirety of Douglas Davis' 18 points coming on six three-pointers. Maddox finished one rebound away from a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.
Mavraides finished with 12 points, including Princeton's first eight overall, while Patrick Saunders added 11 and Hummer finished with 10.
The Tigers were outrebounded for the fourth straight game, 35-32, and for the fourth straight time, it didn't cost Princeton the win. Princeton also continued season-long streaks of shooting at least 40% from the field, making 23 of 53 (43.4%) of their attempts, and of scoring 60 points.
It was the first time in the series since 2004, with four games in between, that Princeton reached 60 points against Monmouth, while it was the first time since 2001, two meetings before that 2004 game, that both teams scored 60.
The Tigers will board a flight for the second time this season when they head to Tulsa, which dropped a 71-54 decision to Oklahoma State tonight to fall to 4-4, for a 1 p.m. Central Time game Sunday.
