PRINCETON (2/11/10) - The Princeton women's hockey returns to Baker Rink this weekend to open a regular-season ending four-game homestand this weekend against two teams ahead in the standings, first-place Clarkson and fourth-place St. Lawrence.
Princeton entered last weekend tied for third in the ECAC standings but losses at Colgate and Cornell dropped the Tigers to sixth in the league standings with four league games left before the postseason begins.
The Tigers opened last weekend by dropping a one-goal decision at Colgate. The Raiders never trailed in the game and built their lead to as many as two goals twice before Princeton closed the gap late. Danielle DiCesare sparked the Tiger offense in the game with a hand in all three goals, scoring one and assisting on the others. Melanie Wallace and Stephanie Denino provided the other goals and Wallace joined DiCesare with multiple points, also adding an assist on the final goal. A day later, the Tigers fell behind Cornell midway through the first and the Big Red widened the gap in each following period on its way to a 6-0 triumph.
As a result, the Tigers find themselves looking up in the standings in the battle for home ice. Princeton is currently in seventh place with 20 points, which trails fourth-place St. Lawrence by three points for the final home-ice playoff position. Quinnipiac and Rensselaer are tied with 22 points in between the Saints and Tigers. Clarkson, Cornell and Harvard maintain the top-three spots in the standings. The top four teams have all clinched playoff spots already.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night against first-place Clarkson. Princeton is 11-4-1 all-time against the Golden Knights and 4-1-1 in games played at Baker Rink. The Tigers dropped their last decision to Clarkson 3-0 in early December, a game that snapped a seven-game streak of one-goal games in the series.
Clarkson is 20-7-3 overall and 14-3-1 in the ECAC to currently top the league standings. Clarkson also ranks fourth in the National Polls. The Golden Knights enter the weekend winners of four of their last six and got back in the win column last Saturday by blanking Union. That win snapped a two-game skid at the hands of St. Lawrence and Rensselaer, which marked only the second time this season Clarkson had dropped consecutive games.
Princeton closes the weekend against St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Princeton holds a 24-17-3 all-time series edge with the Saints and the teams are 9-9-2 in games played at Baker Rink. St. Lawrence took the first meeting this season 3-1 to snap a two-game Princeton win streak in the series as Princeton won both meetings a season ago.
The Saints carry a three-game win streak into this weekend and are now 14-9-7 overall and 10-5-3 in the ECAC. St. Lawrence is 7-2-2 in their last 11 games and swept Clarkson, Union and Rensselaer last week to climb into the top third of the ECAC standings for the first time this season.
