Women's Hockey Completes Shutout Weekend With 3-0 Victory
February 13, 2010 | Women's Ice Hockey
One night after a 1-0 overtime thriller over the fourth-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights, the Princeton defense stood tall once again. The Tiger women's hockey team took a big step towards home ice in the ECAC postseason with a 3-0 shutout of St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink.
Sophomore goaltender Rachel Weber matched the efforts of freshman Cassie Seguin one night earlier; Weber made 26 saves, including nine in a first period controlled by St. Lawrence, to record the shutout and her seventh win of the season. Princeton is now 12-11-4, 10-6-4 in the ECAC and will enter next weekend two points out of one of the top four spots in the conference.
The Saints took it to Princeton for the better part of 15 minutes, but Weber and a suffocating defense made sure that the scoreboard remained empty. The Tigers gathered themselves late, and Heather Landis set up Princeton's first goal with a pass to Alex Kinney in front of the crease. Kinney skated across goaltender Brittony Chartier and found an opening for a 1-0 lead with 1:25 left in the period.
The second period would be a back-and-forth affair, but it was Princeton who got the only goal. On a power play, Melanie Wallace found Paula Romanchuk, who fired in her eighth goal of the season from the left circle.
The first 13 minutes of the third period belonged to Princeton, and the Tigers capitalized when Wallace found a patient Corey Stearns alone in front of the goal. Instead of rushing a shot, she waited for an opening to present itself and then ripped in an insurance goal. St. Lawrence pulled its goalie with about seven minutes remaining in the period and peppered Weber with shots, but none found the back of the net.
