Women's Hoops Improves to 7-0 in League with 72-49 Win Over Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (2/13/10) - Freshman Niveen Rasheed posted her second straight double-double to give the Princeton women's basketball team a 72-49 win over Cornell on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Newman Arena.
This is the first time in program history the Tigers have started conference play with seven straight wins as Princeton improves to 19-2 overall and 7-0 in the Ivy League.
"We weren't firing on all cylinders and our bench came through huge," head coach Courtney Banghart said referencing the 28-point contribution from the bench. "This team really plays as one and that showed tonight. The Ivy League gauntlet is a war. We're only half way through it, but I couldn't be happier for the team that their hard work has gotten them to 7-0."
Rasheed recorded her double-double in the first half with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also picked up three assists and three steals during the first 20 minutes. She finished the game with 18 points, 15 rebounds and four assists and steals each.
Sophomore Devona Allgood was one rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds while adding two blocks. Junior Krystal Hill and sophomore Laura Johnson added 12 points apiece.
Princeton went 0 for 6 from the floor to start the game, helped along by five offensive boards to get those second chances. Rasheed and Allgood paired up to score the team's first 20 points, as the Tigers grabbed a 20-12 start.
A long ball from Johnson at the top of the key followed by a layup from Hill made it a 13-point game 25-12 at 10:39. The teams closed out the half trading baskets with the Tigers taking a 35-22 lead into the locker room.
At the end of the first half Princeton had 13 offensive boards and 14 defensive boards, while Cornell had 16 total rebounds with 12 coming on the defensive end.
Cornell came out in the second half and scored the first four points to make it 35-26. The Big Red started to get into a flow and scored 10 points in the next four minutes to cut its deficit to just five with 13:50 to play.
Sensing their lead started to drift, the Tigers picked up the energy and went on a 12-5 run to take a 53-41 edge with 9:10 to play. Princeton continued to increase its lead closing out the second on a 19-8 run to settle the score at 72-49.
Princeton shot 40 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the line and 31.3 percent from long range.
Cornell's shooting stood at 39.6 percent while the went 6 for 9 from the line and shot 38.5 percent from behind the arc. Allie Fedorowicz led the Big Red with 15 points while Clare Fitzpatrick added 10. Laura Benson had a game-high 10 assists and had six boards, while Whitney Hagan led Cornell in rebounds with eight.
Princeton will travel to Brown and Yale next weekend, with its first stop in New Haven on Friday, Feb. 19 for a 7 p.m., tip with the Bulldogs.
