PRINCETON (2/18/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team closes out the regular season this weekend with its sights still set on home ice for the ECAC playoffs. Princeton sits two points out of a home ice playoff spot with two games left to play.
Princeton did not allow a goal last weekend in sweeping Clarkson and St. Lawrence at home and keeping itself in the race for a top-four finish and home ice in the opening round of the playoffs. Princeton currently sits in sixth place and trails a third-place tie between Harvard and Rensselaer by two points. Fifth-place Quinnipiac sits between the Tigers and the third-place tie.
Should any ties exist following the weekend, Princeton owns the head-to-head tiebreakers against Harvard and Quinnipiac. Princeton and RPI skated to a pair of ties. The next tiebreaker is total wins, followed by record against the top-four finishers.
Princeton will need some help to climb into the top third of the league standings. In addition to needing wins in its games against Brown and Yale, the Tigers need the teams ahead of them to lose. Harvard visits Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Rensselaer travels to Cornell and Colgate, and Quinnipiac will face the same two opponents as Princeton.
The Tigers got back into the race for home ice last weekend by picking up wins over two teams ahead of them in the standings. It started on Friday night when Danielle DiCesare's overtime goal lifted Princeton to a 1-0 win over the league's first-place team. Princeton continued the run a day later with a goal in each period as the Tigers' claimed a 3-0 win over St. Lawrence. Alex Kinney, Paula Romanchuk and Corey Stearns provided the goals. Princeton earned series splits with both teams by picking up the wins.
Princeton's two goaltenders, Cassie Seguin and Rachel Weber, each played a game and recorded a shutout over the weekend. Seguin made 21 saves to blank Clarkson, her fourth shutout of the season, and Weber earned her first shutout with 26 against St. Lawrence.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday night against Brown. Princeton is 32-28-2 all-time against the Bears and 15-12 in games played at Baker Rink. The Tigers have won two-straight games in the series by shutout, including a 5-0 win earlier this season in Providence. Romanchuk and Sasha Sherry each had a goal and assist in the win and Seguin made 18 saves.
Brown is 2-20-4 overall and 0-17-3 in the ECAC entering the final weekend of the regular season. Brown has dropped 10 games in a row and has league ties this season against Quinnipiac, Union and Rensselaer.
Princeton closes the weekend against Yale on Saturday afternoon. Princeton holds a 51-10-2 all-time series edge with the Bulldogs and leads 26-6 in games played at Baker Rink. Princeton has won four games in a row in the series, including a 4-0 win in November. Julie Johnson and Julie Flynn had multiple points in the win and Seguin made 20 saves.
Yale is currently 10-14-3 overall and 8-11-1 in the ECAC. The Bulldogs are currently tied with Dartmouth for the eighth and final ECAC postseason berth entering the weekend. Yale was swept by Dartmouth in the regular season so the Bulldogs will have to gain points on Dartmouth this weekend to make the playoffs. Yale enters the weekend having won once in its last four games and split last weekend against Colgate and Cornell.
