PRINCETON (2/24/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team travels to Boston this weekend to take on fourth-ranked Harvard in a best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinal series at the Bright Hockey Center. Princeton took the season series from Harvard with a win and tie but both games went to overtime.
Princeton split its games last weekend, falling to Brown in overtime last Friday and blanking Yale on Saturday in the regular season finale. On Friday, Danielle DiCesare and Corey Stearns scored to give Princeton a 2-0 lead, but three straight Bear goals gave Brown a third period lead. Charissa Stadnyk evened the game at 3-3 quickly but a Brown goal with 19 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Bears the 4-3 triumph.
The Tigers bounced back a day later with two goals in the first and third periods and 20 saves from Rachel Weber to blank Yale 4-0 and complete the home schedule with a win. Paula Romanchuk, Stadnyk, Heather Landry and Julie Johnson had the goals for the Tigers.
The Tigers finished tied for fifth in the final ECAC standings, but lost their tiebreaker with Rensselaer and as a result are seeded sixth in the tournament and draw third-seeded Harvard. Princeton and Harvard met in the 2002 quarterfinal round and the Crimson knocked off a higher seeded Tiger team in two games at Baker Rink.
The 2009-10 Tigers met Harvard twice during the regular season and both games needed extra time as Princeton won a game in overtime and the other game ended in a draw. On Nov. 14, the Tigers claimed a 2-1 overtime win in Cambridge as Landry opened the scoring four minutes into the game and closed the scoring on a breakaway in overtime after Harvard tied the game in the closing minutes with an extra skater. Weber made 25 saves in the win and Princeton outshot Harvard 39-26. Landry has scored three straight Princeton goals at Harvard as the Tigers have wins of 1-0 and 2-1 in their last two visits to Cambridge.
The teams' second meeting came on Jan. 8 at Baker Rink and ended in a 3-3 tie. Princeton scored two goals in the first 10 minutes from Romanchuk and Stearns and led 2-0, only to have Harvard draw even early in the second period. A second Romanchuk goal gave Princeton a 3-2 lead through two stanzas, but Jillian Dempsey evened the score on the power play with four minutes left. Cassie Seguin stopped 24 shots in the tie as Harvard outshot Princeton 25-16.
Harvard leads the all-time series with Princeton 36-27-3 overall and is 20-12-1 in the series at home. Princeton enters the weekend uneaten in its last three with Harvard, going 2-0-1 in the span.
Harvard is currently ranked fourth in the nation with an 18-6-5 overall record and a 13-6-3 mark in the ECAC. After a 2-3 start, Harvard is 16-3-5 since and has just one loss in its last 10 games, a 3-2 overtime los at RPI on Feb. 12. Last weekend Harvard took three of four points on the road, edging St. Lawrence and tying Clarkson.
