PRINCETON, N.J. (2/6/10) - Junior Addie Micir scored a career-high 25 points to help lead the Princeton women's basketball team past Dartmouth 58-47 on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Jadwin Gym.
The Tigers improve to 17-2 overall and 5-0 in Ivy League play, with their second straight weekend sweep after knocking off Harvard 73-54 last night. Tonight's win marks the Tigers' first win over the Big Green in three seasons. Dartmouth falls to 8-11 overall and 3-2 in league play.
"It was a great weekend to win two straight," head coach Courtney Banghart said. "These kids have worked so hard since September, in preparation for the grind of the Ivy League, and to win two tough back-to-back games like this makes it all worth it."
Micir shot 8 for 18 overall, was 3 for 9 from behind the arc and 6 for 8 from the line. She added two rebounds and one assist. Backing her up was sophomore Lauren Edwards with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and three assists. Classmate Devona Allgood added nine points and led the team on the glass with eight rebounds. Freshman Niveen Rasheed contributed five points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
For the second straight game, the Tigers found themselves in an early hole and managed to claw their way back.
Dartmouth went on a 6-0 run to start the game and after sophomore Laura Johnson drained a three from the right side, the Big Green responded with another 5-0 run to make it 11-3 at 16:08. Micir added her first basket at 15:46 to make it a six-point game before the shooting went cold as neither team would score for the next three minutes.
After a layup by Sasha Dosenko, Edwards answered back with one of her own and Micir followed up with a three from the left side to make it 13-10. Dartmouth managed to take two five-point leads before a layup by Allgood at 7:06 cut Princeton's deficit to just two. Micir evened the game with she dribbled around the arc and cut in on the right side with a jumper to make it 19 all.
A Faziah Steen jumper gave Dartmouth the two-point lead but Allgood delivered a layup over the head of her defender to make it 21-21.
Princeton took its first lead of the game on an Edwards drive and layup with 3:34 to play in the half. The Big Green added five more points to give themselves a 25-23 lead before Micir drove down the lane and put away a layup with 10 seconds to play to end the first half, 25-25.
The first half stats had Dartmouth scoring eight second-chance points as the Big Green had a 22-13 edge in rebounds including a 9-0 advantage in offensive boards.
Princeton started the second half on a 6-2 run to make it 32-27, but its five-point lead was quickly brought back to a two-point game by the Big Green.
Edwards added two baskets, the first on a fast break feed from Allgood and the second on a jumper in the paint to make it 36-30 at 15:17.
Micir was clutch at keeping that six-point lead alive when she hit a jumper on the buzzer of the shot clock and then added a three at the top of the key to give Princeton a nine-point edge, 41-32.
The Tigers grabbed their first double-digit advantage of the game at 7:20 on a fast break basket from Edwards.
The teams traded two points, before Dartmouth started to sneak up on the Tigers scoring four straight to make it a six-point game, 47-41 with 4:21 to play. After a Rasheed free throw, a Margaret Smith jumper on the other end made it a two-possession game with 3:29 to go.
However, those final three minutes belonged to Princeton as the squad rattled off nine points to Dartmouth's four to get the 58-47 victory.
Princeton finished the game shooting 41.4 percent from the floor, 72.7 percent from the line and 26.7 percent from behind the arc. Dartmouth shot 36.7 percent overall, 64.3 from the line and 16.7 from long range. The Big Green won the rebound battle, 35-33 although the Tigers had the edge in the second half, 20-13.
Steen led the Big Green in scoring with 10 points, while adding three rebounds, four assists and one steal. Dosenko and Margaret Smith both added nine points and four rebounds each. Brittney Smith led the team with 11 rebounds, while adding eight points, three assists, three blocks and three steals. Betsy Williams followed up with eight rebounds.
