Women's Squash Rebounds To Win Consolation Final, Place Fifth Nationally
March 01, 2010 | Women's Squash
Despite a disappointing 5-4 loss to Yale in the Howe Cup quarterfinal, the Princeton women's squash team did its best to end the weekend on a high note. Following a 7-2 win over Williams College, the Tigers avenged a season-opening loss to Stanford with an 8-1 victory in the season finale.
The victories leave Princeton as the fifth-ranked team in the nation at the end of the 2010 season. It is also the final team match in the careers of seniors Neha Kumar, Emery Maine, Kaitlin Sennatt, Amanda Siebert and Vanessa Yu. The group combined for one of the most impressive stretches in Princeton squash history; since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Princeton has won two Ivy League crowns and three Howe Cup national championships.
Princeton won Saturday's consolation semifinal 7-2 over Williams College. The Tigers had a pair of memorable five-game wins in the match. At No. 2, Julie Cerullo defeated Jennifer Coxe 11-13,15-13,2-11,11-2,11-6, while at No. 5, Nikki Sequeira rallied past Caroline Henry 12-10,5-11,11-13,11-5,11-5.
Sunday's 8-1 victory over Stanford featured a 3-2 win for freshman Casey Cortes at the No. 8 spot. The freshman went overtime in the fifth game to earn a 12-10,8-11,14-12,6-11,12-10 victory.
Princeton will now focus on the individual championships, which take place next weekend at Trinity College.
