Softball Gets Friday Sweep
March 20, 2010 | Softball
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Princeton's softball team won two very different games Friday at Stanford's tournament and came away with its first single-day sweep of the season.
Princeton 1, Saint Mary's 0
The Tigers (5-10) capitalized on a seventh-inning error by Saint Mary's (11-9) and Alex Peyton got the win in the circle as Princeton got past Saint Mary's 1-0 in Friday's first game.
Peyton allowed only two base runners in five innings before giving way to Jamie Lettire for the sixth. The senior Lettire hit a batter and eventually stranded her on third but saw more trouble in the seventh. Princeton had the last at-bat, but the Gaels were in position to strike first after Lettire hit the first batter she faced in the seventh and saw her take third on an illegal pitch after stealing second. Lettire was lifted for Peyton after the illegal pitch, and the rookie pitcher got the final two batters to ground out to third to keep the game scoreless.
After getting out of nearly allowing the Gaels their first run, Lettire provided Princeton with the game-winner. Lettire singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh for what was just Princeton's second hit of the day and took third on Kelsey Quist's double. With Peyton at the plate, Lettire scored on a throwing error to end the game and give the Tigers a win.
Princeton 12, Santa Clara 3
Princeton reached a season-high run total and started early in its 12-3 win over Santa Clara later Friday afternoon, defeating the Broncos for the second time in three meetings this week.
Junior Megan Weidrick had three RBIs with a two-run double in the first and a run-scoring single in a third to help the Tigers re-take a 4-3 lead after the Broncos (5-10) picked up three runs off freshman Liza Kuhn in the second.
An RBI double by Nicole Ontiveros gave Princeton its fifth run in the fourth inning, and two frames later, Candace Button highlighted a four-run sixth with her first career home run, a two-run shot.
Kelsey Quist had Princeton's final RBI in the seventh, part of a three-run frame to help the Tigers plate a dozen. Each team had three runs in the game, though the Tigers had all three of theirs in a second inning that saw Santa Clara score all three of its runs.
Princeton will play twice Saturday against Cal Poly and No. 10 Stanford beginning at 12:15 p.m. Pacific Time.
