Cal Poly, Stanford Defeat Softball
March 21, 2010 | Softball
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Cal Poly (10-8) rallied and No. 10 Stanford (17-3) no-hit the Princeton softball team (5-12) Saturday at Stanford's tournament in California.
Cal Poly 7, Princeton 6 (8 inn.)
The Mustangs scored five runs over the last four innings to rally from down as many as three runs in a 7-6, eight-inning victory over Princeton.
Princeton scored first on a Candace Button RBI-single in the second inning before Cal Poly pulled ahead 2-1 in the fourth against Tiger rookie starter Alex Peyton.
Two Tiger seniors put Princeton ahead 5-2 in the fifth after a two-RBI single from Collette Abbott and a two-run home run from Jamie Lettire, her fifth on the season and 34th of her career, just three short of matching the career record of 37 held by Melissa Finley '05.
It was quickly a 5-4 game when Cal Poly responded in its half of the fifth, and the Mustangs struck in the seventh against Lettire, who entered the circle in the sixth to relieve Peyton. A one-out RBI double tied it for Cal Poly, and the Mustangs answered with two more in the eighth after Megan Weidrick put Princeton ahead in the top of the eighth on a run-scoring single.
(10) Stanford 7, Princeton 0
Princeton had just one base runner against Stanford pitcher Teagan Gerhart, sister of the school's Heisman Trophy finalist running back Toby Gerhart, completing the first no-hitter against the Tigers this season.
Jamie Lettire reached on a two-out error at shortstop in the fourth and advanced no further than first base. The Cardinal jumped on Princeton freshman pitcher Liza Kuhn early, scoring four runs in the first inning before adding to their lead with another run in the fourth and their final two in the fifth.
Princeton will have one more game in California against Santa Clara at 9 a.m. Pacific Sunday.
