Women's Water Polo Drops Two on Final Day in California
March 21, 2010 | Women's Water Polo
LOS ANGELES (3/21/10) - The 20th-ranked Princeton women's water polo dropped both of its games on Saturday at the LMU Invitational, falling 10-8 to 14th-ranked San Diego State and 13-3 to host and ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount.
Princeton dropped a close game in the opener to the Aztecs. Although Princeton only led once, scoring first for a 1-0 lead, the Tigers never trailed by more than two goals and scored two straight goals early in the final quarter to draw even at 8-8 before SDSU converted on two 6-on-5 goals to close out the game and pick up the win.
Lauren Brunner, Carolina Ardila and Brittany Zwirner had two goals in the loss, while Phoebe Champion and Helen Meigs added single goals. Kristen Ward made eight saves in the loss.
In the day's second game, LMU scored six of the game's first seven goals in building a 6-1 lead after nine minutes of game time. Champion scored in the first quarter to cut the Lion lead to 3-1, but that was as close as Princeton would get in the game. Zwirner had the other two Tiger goals, scoring once in the second and once in the third quarters. Wards made three saves in three quarters in the loss.
Princeton fell to 12-7 with the losses and finished off its Spring Break trip in California with a 5-4 record. Princeton opens its league season next weekend with a single game at Bucknell next Saturday.
