ELON, N.C. (3/5/10) - The Princeton baseball team fell to Radford 9-8 in 11 innings in its season-opening game on Friday night at the Elon Invitational. Princeton led 8-3 after four innings, but the Highlanders chipped away at the lead, tying the game in the bottom of the ninth and winning in the 11th.
Sam Mulroy and Noel Gonzales-Luna each had two hits and two RBIs for Princeton in the loss, while Brian Berkowitz had a team-high three hits. Princeton totaled 14 hits in the game, four more than the Highlanders, but a single, a stolen base, and another single, all with two outs in the 11th, doomed Princeton.
The teams traded first inning runs. In the top of the first, freshman Matt Bowman led off the Princeton season and his collegiate career by hitting a home run to left field.
Princeton then extended the lead to 6-1 with a five-spot in the third inning, which was highlighted by a Jon Broscious two-run single and a Gonzales-Luna two-run double. Radford trimmed the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the third, scoring twice without a hit.
Princeton stretched its lead in the fourth when Mulroy hit a two-run homer to left field and the Tigers kept the lead at 8-2 until the fifth when Radford plated three runs, the big hit being a two-run double from Tyren Rivers.
Radford plated single runs in the seventh and ninth innings to force extra innings and after a scoreless tenth, won in the 11th on Alex Guerra's walk-off single.
Five Tigers pitched in the loss. Dan Barnes started all allowed two earned runs on two hits in three innings. Ryan Makis, Ross Staine, Matt Grabowski and Chad Ohlendorf also pitched. Grabowski allowed an unearned run in three innings of work. Ohlendorf was tagged with the loss, while Radford's Abram Williams, its fifth pitcher of the game, was credited with the win.
Princeton will continue the tournament schedule tomorrow when it faces Elon for a doubleheader.
