St. John's Rallies Late for Win Over Princeton Baseball Team
April 21, 2010 | Baseball
QUEENS, N.Y. (4/20/10) - St. John's rallied against the Tiger bullpen to take a 12-5 win over the Princeton baseball team on Tuesday night at Kaiser Stadium. Sam Mulroy and John Mishu homered in the loss and starter Ross Staine provided six sold innings.
Princeton broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with two runs and added another two in the fifth inning to build a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, Princeton put its first two batters on base as Nate Baird singled and Matt Connor walked. After a groundout, Baird would score on a wild pitch and Connor scored when Andrew Whitener reached on an error.
An inning later, Noel Gonzales-Luna hit a leadoff single and wound up on third before scoring on a Mulroy home run to left field, his seventh of the season. St. John's got an unearned run back in the sixth inning thanks to a single and three Tiger errors. Mishu hit a solo homer, his fourth of the season, in the seventh inning to give Princeton a four-run advantage, but the Red Storm scored 11 runs over the seventh and eighth innings to rally for the win.
It started in the seventh inning when back-to-back hits to start the inning chased Staine from the game after six innings without allowing an earned run. Both runners would eventually score as Staine completed the game having pitched six-plus innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits, while fanning four. Ryan Makis entered the game and surrendered nine runs over the next inning and two-thirds and took the loss.
Princeton fell to 9-24 with the loss. The Tigers resume Ivy League action this weekend when they host Penn on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of doubleheaders.
