The Carnegie Cup: Cornell & Yale

Yale Edges Princeton Heavies For Carnegie Cup In Battle Of Top-10 Trio
April 24, 2010 | Heavyweight Rowing
The eighth-ranked Yale men's heavyweight crew used the comfort of its home course, the Housatonic River, to edge both No. 5 Princeton and No. 6 Cornell in a tight showdown for the Carnegie Cup. Each team claimed at least one victory during the morning session, which featured four tight races.
While Princeton and Cornell had both won at least 13 more Carnegie Cups than Yale heading into the weekend, it was the Bulldogs who left the morning regatta with the trophy. In its first win in this meet since 2007, Yale placed first in 5:25.6, while Princeton finished only 1.4 seconds behind. Cornell finished third overall, though the Big Red was still only 4.1 seconds behind the winning Bulldogs.
The three varsity crews were each among the top seven in the latest EARC seeding poll and could easily meet again in the Eastern Championship grand final on May 16. The Princeton first varsity left the morning with a 4-3 overall record and a 3-2 mark within the Ivy League.
Both Princeton and Cornell hotly contested both the second varsity and novice eight races. In fact, the competition was so close in the second varsity that it needed a video replay to determine a winner; both Princeton and Cornell finished with matching time of 5:33.3, but Princeton was awarded the win by about three feet. Yale finished third in 5:42.0. The Big Red did come away with a narrow win in the novice eight by finishing in 5:33.9, only .4 of a second in front of Princeton. Both teams topped Yale by more 12 seconds.
The third varsity would be another close finish, though it would not involve Princeton. Yale won that race in 5:39.3, half a second faster than Cornell, while Princeton took third in 5:48.1.
Princeton will conclude its regular season next weekend in the Content Cup regatta against the third-ranked Brown Bears. It will be the Tigers' second home event of the season and is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with the varsity eight race to go off at 9:45.
