GREENSBORO, N.C. (5/29/10) - The Princeton track and field teams qualified five student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, making the total at the end of the three-day East Regional, seven that are headed to Eugene, Ore.
Sophomore Alex Banfich finished third in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:16.14, finishing third in the first heat. Her finish advances her to the finals in Oregon.
Junior Ashley Higginson will also be competing in the finals, the steeplechase. Higginson placed fourth overall and first in her heat with a time of 10:20.85. Freshman Mel Newbery posted a time of 11:05.78 in the event.
On the men's side sophomore Donn Cabral qualified for the finals in both the steeplechase and the 5000. Cabral finished second in the steeplechase with a time of 8:35.60, a little more than one second behind the winner Matt Hughes of Louisville. In the same event senior Elliot Welder recorded a time of 9:06.43.
Cabral finished 13th overall and fifth in his heat in the 5000 at 14:13.68 to qualify for the finals. Junior Kyle Soloff led the Tigers with an eighth place finish and winning his heat with a time of 14:11.02. Junior Mark Amirault clocked in at 14:29.74.
Sophomore Trevor Van Ackeren ran a 3:51.91 in the semifinals of the 1500, taking fifth in the second heat. His time qualifies him for the finals in Oregon.
In the morning, junior George Abyad threw the discus to 43.50 meters (142-8).
Joining Banfich and Higginson in the Championships will be junior Sarah Cummings who qualified in the 10,000 on Friday.
Cabral, Soloff and Van Ackeren will be joined by senior Justin Frick who qualified in the high jump on Saturday.
The finals will be held June 9-12 on the campus of University of Oregon.
