Cabral Posts Fastest Time in Steeplechase Semis on Opening Day of NCAAs

EUGENE, Ore. (6/9/10) - Sophomore Donn Cabral provided an exceptional kickstart for the Princeton track & field teams on opening day of the 2010 NCAA Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on Wednesday, June 9.
Cabral posted the fastest time in the semifinals of the men's steeplechase to qualify for the national final. Cabral ran an 8:42.84 to win his heat and was 0:0.76 seconds faster than Louisville's Matt Hughes who has the best time in the NCAA in the event. Cabral was more than a second faster than last year's second-place finisher Hillary Bor of Iowa State who clocked in at 8:43.82 in the preliminary. Cabral will compete against Hughes, Bor and 11 other competitors in the final on Friday at 6 p.m.
Junior Sarah Cummings ran in the finals of the women's 10,000-meter run and posted a time of 34:13.04 to take 23rd. Iowa State's Lisa Koll, the NCAA record holder in the event, won the race with a time of 32:49.25. The two-time Ivy League 10,000-meter champion shaved more than 26 seconds off her time from last year's NCAA Championship when she earned All-America honors.
Tomorrow, sophomore Trevor Van Ackeren will run in the men's 1500 at 4:45 p.m., and junior Ashley Higginson will run in the semifinals of the women's steeplechase at 6:15 p.m.
