Lightweight 4 Represents Princeton At Henley; Pair Qualifies For U-23s
July 01, 2010 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Gianthomas Volpe '12, Barrett Lachance '11, Alex Rubert '12, and Nicholas Donald '11, along with heavyweight coxswain Keanan Clark '13 represented the EARC and IRA national champion Princeton men's lightweight crew this past week at the 2010 Royal Henley Regatta.
The quartet entered the Prince Albert Challenge Cup, a competition for student-coxed four crews. Princeton, which became the first American lightweight program to win the Temple Cup last summer, lost its opening race to Imperial College by 3/4 of a length. Imperial College got out to a strong lead by rowing extremely hard for the opening two minutes, but a resilient and powerful Princeton boat battled back in the middle of the race and actually turned an open deficit to a five-seat advantage over a two-minute span.
Unfortunately, the team with the final push was Imperial, which rallied in the final 400 meters to win by about two seconds.
While four members of the national champion were in England for Henley, two more will be heading to Belarus this summer for the U-23 World Championships. Christian Klein '11 qualified for the U.S. LM2-, and Steven Cutler '12 qualified for the LM4x. Robin Prendes '12 is also vying for a spot, and that announcement is due to come in the next few days.
