CAMDEN, N.J. – The No. 3 Princeton University men's lightweight rowing team ended the first day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship in a strong position Friday at the Cooper River, with both 8+ boats advancing to their Grand Finals.
In a thrilling heat that was decided in the final moments, the 1V (5:43.090) earned a first-place finish and advanced to its Grand Final, finishing ahead of the University of Pennsylvania (5:43.880) and Navy (5:44.950).
"I thought it was a good piece," said Nick Aronow. "Our goal was to win the heat and we got up on Penn off the start and maintained that margin throughout the piece. That's exactly what we wanted to do. Going into Sunday we're feeling really good and excited to be next to Harvard and put down a good piece. I'm excited for my last piece as a Princeton rower."
The 2V (5:54.170) also moved on to its Grand Final, finishing third after crossing the finish line ahead of Navy (6:01.540). Harvard (5:49.930) took first and Columbia (5:53.020) second.
The 4+ competed in two races, first finishing eighth (6:29.628) in the time trial. The Tigers then earned a spot in the Petite Final after finishing fourth (6:53.030) in the A/B semifinal.
