PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 2 Princeton University men's lightweight rowing team hosted No. 1 Harvard and No. 6 Yale at Lake Carnegie Saturday for the Goldthwait and Vogel Cups.
"In my tenure as head coach since 2010, every single time the HYP regatta tips off, you see something you've never seen before as a coach or spectator of the sport of rowing," said Head Coach Marty Crotty. "Today we saw the Harvard 1st Varsity smash the course record on Lake Carnegie by 5+ seconds to win the Goldthwait Cup in a time that also set the world best time in the history of lightweight men's rowing. The previous record was set by the German National team at 6:30,4 in 1993, 32 years ago.
While we are disappointed to be on the wrong end of the result today, our guys, especially the seniors who rowed in their last ever race on Lake Carnegie (Aronow and Van Velden), they understand the privilege of taking part in this regatta and the new standards that are being set. Every lightweight who rowed in the four boat races today has a hand in raising the bar.
We have three weeks to the Sprints (Ivy Championships) so we'll get to work. Head down. Come out of the regular class schedule and exams —- find our top speed. The post season is a new season. Sprints and IRAs will be a dog fight."
The 1V (5:35.2) finished just short of the Crimson (5:28.5) and ahead of the Bulldogs (5:39.4). The 2V (5:42.7) took third in a close race that saw Harvard (5:37.2) earn the win and Yale (5:41.4) come in second. In a thrilling 3V race, Princeton (5:47.0) finished in front of the Crimson (5:48.5) and the Bulldogs (6:00.6).In the 4+, Harvard (6:55.7) came away with the victory while the Tigers' A boat (7:02.5) was second and the B boat (7:11.9) third.
