Tiger Rowers Win Seven Medals At U23 World Championships
July 28, 2010 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Rising senior Michaela Strand, who led the Princeton open crew to a silver medal at the EAWRC Championships and a bronze medal at the NCAA Championships, rounded out her medal collection with gold during the U23 World Championships, held in in Brest, Belarus. Current or former Princeton rowers won seven medals overall, including three golds.
Strand joined open teammate Sara Hendershot '10, the stroke of the 2010 open crew, to lead the U.S. women's 4- to gold. The coxswain of the Princeton open crew, which went 12-0 last year and knocked off eventual NCAA champion Virginia, was Ariel Frost; she also continued her fine summer by coxing the U.S. women's 8+ to a gold medal. Two more members of that talented Princeton boat, rising seniors Ashton Brown and Lauren Wilkinson, led Canada to a bronze medal in the same race.
On the men's side, heavyweight rising sophomore Mike Evans stroked the British 8+ to a bronze medal, while rising senior lightweight Robin Prendes stroked the U.S. light men's 4- to a bronze medal as well.
Several other Princeton rowers made their respective grand finals during the U23 Championships. Senior Blake Parsons finished fifth in the men's 4+ A final for Canada, while Nicole Bielawski finished fourth in the women's 4x A final for the USA. Lightweight senior Christian Klein placed 6th in the men's 2- A final, while junior Ian Silveira finished fourth in the men's 4x B final. Fellow junior Steven Cutler finished sixth in the light men's 4x B final.
