Field Hockey Team's Fast Start Too Much For Dartmouth in 9-1 Win

PRINCETON (9/17/10) - The fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team's fast start was too much for Dartmouth on Friday night as the Tigers raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes of a 9-1 win in the Ivy League opener at Class of '52 Stadium.
Princeton led 2-0 three minutes into the game, 3-0 four minutes in and 5-0 after eight minutes in a meeting of two of the nation's seven undefeated teams entering the game. Princeton continued its offensive outburst to begin the season and now has scored at least seven goals in three of its four wins.
Kathleen Sharkey scored three goals in the win to build her nation's best total to 13. She now has scored three or more goals in three of Princeton's four games. Katie Reinprecht added two goals for the Tigers.
Rachel Neufeld opened scoring for Princeton with her second goal of the season in the third minute when she put a rebound into the Dartmouth goal after a Michelle Cesan shot hit the pipe. Cesan then set up Sharkey for Princeton's second goal a minute later.
Princeton continued to build its lead as Sharkey scored off a direct corner in the sixth minute and Reinprecht scored from Neufeld in the 16th minute. Amanda Bird scored her first collegiate goal a minute later and Molly Goodman completed the first half scoring with a blast in the 27th minute off a corner. Julia Reinprecht assisted on the third and sixth Princeton goals, with Alexandra Douwes adding an assist on the third.
Princeton made the score 7-0 when Katie Reinprecht scored eight minutes into the second half. Dartmouth got on the board in the 53rd minute when Virginia Piesch put in a rebound but the Tigers finished the night with goals from Sharkey and Cesan to win the game 9-1.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 28-7 including a 17-0 margin the opening half. The Tigers also outcornered Dartmouth 10-6. Goalkeeper Christina Maida got the win following a shutout first half and Jennifer King made two saves in the second half. Dartmouth's Meagan Vakiener made 10 saves in the loss.
The Tigers are now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Ivy League. Princeton will continue its homestand on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., against Syracuse.
