Women's Volleyball Opens Home Schedule With 3-1 Win Over Temple
September 23, 2010 | Women's Volleyball
Freshman Chelsea Parker made her Dillon Gym debut a memorable one. The outside hitter from Tampa, Fla., recorded 17 kills and 10 digs to lead the Princeton women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Temple Wednesday night in the 2010 home opener. Princeton improved to 5-6 with the win and will head into the Ivy League season with some positive momentum.
Princeton, which will take on defending Ivy champion Friday, Oct. 1, defeated Temple 25-19, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19.
The Tiger outsides led the way, recording 32 kills and 27 digs between them. Rudnick, one of the top hitters in the league, recorded 15 kills and 17 digs and hit .278 for the match. Parker was one of two Tigers who hit above .300 for the match; senior Liz McStravick, who recorded three kills and six blocks, hit a team-best .375.
Sophomore Jennifer Palmquist, who was recently selected to the all-tournament team at the Penn State Classic, had 10 kills and six blocks, while junior setter Michaela Venuti led the offense with 38 assists. Four players had double-digit digs for the Tigers; besides Rudnick and Parker, both Hillary Ford and C.C. Lobben had 11 digs apiece.
Princeton cruised to a first-set victory, but Temple took control midway through the second set and won going away. The third set would prove to be the closest, as Temple went on a late 6-0 run to turn a 21-16 deficit to a 22-21 lead. A resilient Tiger team battled back, beginning with kills from Parker and Palmquist. An attack error set up a game ball, and Palmquist finished it with a kill.
The Tigers steadily built their lead in the fourth, and a final kill by Rudnick put the victory away for Princeton. The Tigers will return to Dillon Gym for their first full Ivy League weekend, when they host Brown and Yale on Oct. 8-9.
