NEW HAVEN, Conn. (9/25/10) -- The fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team ran its season-opening win streak to six games with a 7-0 win at Yale on Saturday afternoon. It was Princeton's second Ivy win of the season and the fourth time in six games that Princeton has scored seven or more goals.
Kathleen Sharkey, the nation's leading goal scorer, netted three goals in the win for the fourth time this season. She opened the scoring with her 14th of the season on a direct corner off a push from Julia Reinprecht and a stop by Alexandra Douwes. She would then add Princeton's fourth goal late in the first half off a pass from Michelle Cesan and open the second half scoring with an unassisted marker on her second shot off a penalty corner.
Sharkey's first goal came in the 11th minute of the game and the Tigers would add three more tallies in the first half. Allison Behringer gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead six minutes later and Cesan's fourth of the season in the 24th minute made it 3-0. Princeton held a 9-0 edge in shots after a half of play.
Princeton continued its pressure in the second half, firing 19 shots in the period on the Yale goal. Sharkey broke through to make it 5-0 in the 59th minute on the corner continuation and Katie Reinprect made it 6-0 exactly a minute later. Molly Goodman capped the scoring in the 64th minute with an assist from Carrie Diamond to complete the game.
Princeton outshot Yale 28-2 and outcornered the Bulldogs 8-3. Princeton is now 6-0 overall this season and 2-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers return to action on Tuesday night when they host second-ranked Maryland at Class of '52 Stadium at 6 p.m.
