PRINCETON (1/27/11) - The Princeton women's hockey team returns from a three-week layoff during first-semester final exams this weekend to host St. Lawrence and Clarkson at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton went into the break on a seven-game winning streak.
The Tigers' current seven-game win streak is its longest of the season and the longest since Feburary of the 2005-06 season when the Tigers reeled off nine consecutive wins. Princeton is now 10-10-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the ECAC, which is impressive after Princeton managed three wins in its first 14 games of the season.
Princeton's seven-game win streak has featured five shutouts and the Tigers have allowed just three goals in the seven-game span. During the seven games, Princeton has outscored its opponents 24-3. Princeton has also held its opponents to two goals or less in nine straight games and in 16 of the 21 games it has played this season.
Junior goaltender Rachel Weber was in the pipes for all seven wins and strung together a 289:43 shutout streak during the span. That streak was the longest shutout streak in ECAC Hockey history, was the fourth longest shutout streak in the NCAA since the 2000-01 season and set a Princeton record, passing the previous mark set by Roxanne Gaudiel in 2004 by 12 minutes. Weber also won three league Rookie of the Week awards during the span.
Also during the span, six Tigers tallied at least six points in the seven-game stretch. Sally Butler and Olivia Mucha each had eight points in the seven games, while Paula Romanchuk and Sasha Sherry added seven and Heather Landy and Denna Laing had six.
Those names also mimic the top of the Princeton scoring charts as Mucha tops the charts with 15 points. Butler and Sherry had 14 points apiece, while Laing has 11 and Romanchuk 10. Butler has a team-high eight goals and Sherry's 11 assists lead the team.
The Tigers currently sit tied for fifth in the ECAC standings with eight league games left on the docket Princeton is tied with Rensselaer with 15 points. The two are a point behind third-place Dartmouth and Quinnipiac and five behind second-place Harvard. Cornell remains atop the standings, undefeated in league play at 14-0-0. Princeton and RPI have one point on seventh-place St. Lawrence and two on eight-place Clarkson.
Princeton plays those two teams this weekend when St. Lawrence and Clarkson visits Hobey Baker Rink. Friday's opponent, St. Lawrence, stands 12-11-2 overall and 7-6-0 in the ECAC. The Saints carry a three-game win streak into the weekend winning at Dartmouth and at home last weekend against Brown and Yale. The Saints had dropped the previous four games prior to the win streak.
Princeton is 26-17-3 all-time against St. Lawrence and holds a 10-9-2 record at Baker Rink. Princeton has won four of five in the series including a 3-1 win in Canton in early January. Butler and Landry gave Princeton a 2-0 lead in the win and after a Saint goal Landry added an insurance goal. Weber made 29 saves in the win.
On Saturday the Tigers host Clarkson. The Golden Knights are 9-13-3 overall and 6-6-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Golden Knights have won two of three including a sweep of Yale and Brown last weekend at home. Three of Clarkson's last five games have been decided in overtime with two wins over Dartmouth and Yale and a loss to Quinnipiac.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Clarkson 13-4-1 overall and 5-1-1 in games played at home. Princeton blanked Clarkson 2-0 in early January in Potsdam on goals from Sherry and Landry and an 18-save shutout by Weber. It was the third straight shutout in the series.
The Tigers are on the road next weekend visiting Harvard and Dartmouth.
