Penn Rallies Past Women's Squash In Top-5 Showdown
January 28, 2011 | Women's Squash
The fourth-ranked Princeton women's squash team was on the verge of a big Ivy League win Thursday evening, but it was unable to take that final match and ultimately fell 5-4 to No. 5 Penn.
The Tigers, who would still clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title if they can win their remaining league matches, built a 4-1 lead after first-session wins by senior Jackie Moss, freshman Alex Sawin and sophomore Casey Cortes, as well as a second-session victory by freshman Caroline Feeley.
But Penn began to inch closer, which ultimately started with a comeback win for Yarden Odinak over Princeton freshman Lexi Saunders at the No. 4 position. Odinak fought back from a 0-2 deficit to rally for a five-game win. That victory kept the Quakers alive, and Penn followed with 3-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 5.
Princeton freshman Libby Eyre, one of four Tiger rookies to earn invaluable experience in this type of atmosphere, won her first set at the No. 3 position, but Anne Madeira won a pair of close games to build a lead and ultimately earn a 3-1 win. Penn's Courtney Jones also overcame a first-game loss to defeat Nikki Sequeira at No. 7 in five games.
The grueling week for Princeton continues Saturday, when the Tigers head to New Haven to take on No. 2 Yale. Both teams split a pair of matches last season, which each winning at home.
