Yale Women's Squash Defeats Princeton 7-2
January 30, 2011 | Women's Squash
Despite wins from its senior co-captains, the Princeton women's squash was all but knocked out of the Ivy League race with a 7-2 loss at No. 2 Yale.
Two days after a heartbreaking 5-4 home loss to Penn, the Tigers knew there would be no margin for error the rest of the way. Unfortunately, the host Bulldogs would be too strong for Princeton, winning four matches by 3-0 scores and fighting for three others.
The biggest win in the first shift came at the No. 6 spot, when Yale's Caroline Reigeluth trailed 2-0 after a gutsy early effort from Tiger freshman Alex Sawin. Princeton head coach Gail Ramsay has lauded her freshman class' performance throughout the season, and this was another indication that the Tigers' future is in good hands.
The present, though, belonged to a more experienced player in Reigeluth, who rallied for three hard-fought wins, including a 13-11 victory in the fifth game.
Trailing 3-0, Princeton tried to get back into the match with a win from its most experienced player. Senior Jackie Moss, who has been strong all season, was particularly solid in an 11-7, 12-10, 11-6 win over Sarah Toomey.
Yale would take the other two matches during the shift, though, to clinch the team victory.
Princeton did get one more point on the scoreboard, and senior Nikki Sequiera had to fight beyond the limit to get it. She opened her match at No. 7 with 12-10 and 11-9 wins over Katie Ballaine, but then dropped the next two. The fifth set went to 13-13 before Sequiera won the final two points for a 15-13 win.
Princeton will return to Jadwin next weekend for three matches, beginning Friday night against Stanford and continuing with Dartmouth on Saturday and Harvard on Sunday.
