Women's Squash Ends Brief Skid With 8-1 Home Victory Over Stanford
February 05, 2011 | Women's Squash
The fourth-ranked Princeton women's squash team got back on the winning track with a hard-fought 8-1 win over the sixth-ranked Stanford Cardinal Friday night at the Jadwin Squash Courts. The victory, which ended a two-match losing streak, featured a trio of five-game wins at the bottom of the lineup for the host team.
Princeton took care of business in the opening shift, winning each of the four even matches. While senior Jackie Moss was her usual efficient self, maintaining her undefeated season with a 3-0 win at No. 2, freshmen Lexi Saunders and Alex Sawin both went four games before claiming 3-1 wins. The match of the shift came at No. 8, when sophomore Casey Cortes dropped two close games to open her match. She battled back for wins of 11-6 and 11-7, and she rode the momentum to a dominant 11-2 win in the fifth.
Princeton clinched the match early in the second shift, which included 3-0 wins for sophomore Julie Cerullo at No. 1 and freshman Libby Eyre at No. 3. The rest of the three matches each went the distance, with Princeton winning a pair. At No. 7, senior Nikki Sequeira opened her final regular season home weekend by rallying from a 2-1 deficit with 12-10 and 11-8 wins, and freshman Caroline Feeley also rallied from a 2-1 hole with 11-2 and 11-5 wins.
Stanford did pick up a victory at No. 5, as Samantha Buechner won 11-9 in the fifth to defeat Katie Giovinazzo.
Princeton will return to the courts Saturday at noon to take on Dartmouth.
