Women's Hockey Blanks Quinnipiac for Fifth Straight Win
January 03, 2011 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (1/3/11) - The Princeton women's hockey team continued its stingy ways in a 3-0 shutout of Quinnipiac on Monday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. The win was the third straight shutout for the Tigers and goaltender Rachel Weber and Princeton's fourth in five games.
Quinnipiac was the better team in the game's first few minutes but a turnover in the ninth minute led to Princeton's opening goal and a deflection 37 seconds later made it 2-0 and Princeton never looked back in the eventual 3-0 win.
Julie Johnson opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season and third in the last two games at the 8:33 mark. Alex Kinney grabbed an errant Bobcat clearing pass and fed Johnson on the opposite side in a play reminiscent of the one that gave Princeton a 1-0 lead over Boston College on Friday.
Princeton then quickly made it 2-0 at 9:10 when Paula Romanchuk deflected a Sasha Sherry point shot into the top corner for her seventh goal of the season. Heather Landry assisted on the goal, which stunned the Bobcats and turned momentum on Princeton's side.
The Tigers closed the scoring in the second period when Danielle DiCesare netted her second of the year on the rebound of her own shot. Sally Butler had the primary assist after setting up DiCesare in the offensive zone and Krystyna Bellisario added an assist playing the puck out of the Princeton end of the ice.
That was all the offense that Weber would need as she steered away all 19 shots she faced in the 3-0 triumph. She extended her shutout streak to 186:39 and now has blanked four of her last five opponents. She has now allowed a goal in 16 of the last 17 periods that Princeton has played.
Her counterpart in the Bobcat goal, Victoria Vigilanti made 16 saves. Shots were even at 19-19 for the game and also even in each period played.
Princeton improved to 8-10-1 overall and 5-6-1 in ECAC Hockey with the win. The Tigers visit Clarkson and St. Lawrence this weekend.
